Where does desire come from? | Zoom Class Summary

April 16, Wednesday

✍️Today’s class was for newcomers. A meditator from Portugal shared an experience he’d had the day before with Guruji.

His experience went like this: His throat went dry initially, followed by shortness of breath, and finally he dozed off. When he awoke, he felt as though he had undergone surgery. There was a lingering sensation of stitches. He said he feels fine now. He undergone “astral surgery,” a painless procedure that required no hospital visit, no expenses, no post-operative rest, and no stress. This is the blessing one receives when they completely surrender themselves to the Universe.

Guruji asked, “Do you want to know how astral surgery works?”
He said yes, but Guruji remained silent and asked him to continue with his meditation.

✍️ Guruji asked, “Is it better if our wishes go unfulfilled?”
The answer received was “yes,” to which Guruji responded, “Why is this so?”

The response was that we would stop searching if our wishes were fulfilled. Guruji then asked, “Where do desires begin?”

He elaborated with an example:
A person in a past life bought a 10-acre plot of land to build a big hotel and eventually passed away. In his current life, his parents aim to make him a doctor, and he is unaware of the hotel business from his past life. What do you think will happen in this situation?

Let’s go back to the time when he lay in his mother’s womb. The boy is fully aware of everything happening outside, including interactions between his mother and father. He lies there, saddened by everything happening in the world outside. The Universe makes him witness all the mistakes he’s made in past lives, including losses in his hotel business and past quarrels. He tries to escape, saddened by all he has witnessed, and pushes out with all his might. Finally, he enters the world, leaving behind all memory of his time in the womb.

While in the womb, the boy could experience various dimensions. Every baby enters this world in a state of pure innocence with the qualities of a god. They remain connected to the Universe at this stage, though the parents are unaware of it. The child is raised following man-made societal laws and taught to rely on scientific reasoning, slowly disconnecting from the Universe as he accumulates ‘complicated memories’. Over time, his abilities diminish, leaving him to experience only the third dimension. We lose the broader perspective, develop tunnel vision, and forget why we were born, wandering aimlessly through life like a kite with its string cut, without peace of mind. Karmic blocks form when parents impose their own desires, pulling the child away from their true purpose. As a result, the soul remains unsatisfied.

“Do you understand how parents can turn into their children’s enemies?”
“I understand, Guruji.”

✍️ How can a person see God?
Offerings and prayers are not the answer. To see God, one must be a Brahmachari in thought, speech, and deed. A true Brahmachari lives by embracing Brahma, and for that, one must first know what Brahma is. This requires years of tapas (ascetic practice) and is nearly impossible for ordinary people like us. Instead, by living according to the Guru Tattva (the Guru’s Principle) and following, word for word, the guidance of a Guru who knows Brahma, we too can come to know Brahma. God will appear to one who keeps strict observance for 41 days. But can a person truly be a Brahmachari in thought?
(Sree Narayana Gurudevan said: Offer the flower of the mind in worship to Mahesha (Lord Shiva). This means we should clear away impure thoughts and perform puja with the purest of mind. When our thoughts are pure, we become good, and that goodness spreads through the Universe. When we pluck a flower, we take away its soul’s happiness. Gurudevan taught that we should never seek our own happiness by taking away the happiness of another soul.)

✍️ SMS meditation purifies us by clearing complicated memories. But if we watch unnecessary things on our phone (things irrelevant to our life), new complicated memories are created. The same applies when we speak ill of others or listen to gossip. When we gossip, we cannot be certain that what we hear is true. These actions return as karma and form ‘complicated memories’. Each individual must choose whether to live by dharma or fall into adharma.

✍️ Our body works in a different dimension, where even stones can melt. A stone left outside won’t melt because there isn’t enough heat.

We make medicine by grinding rocks into powder, and mine salt from rocks. But no matter what we eat, even if it’s a stone, our body digests it and turns it into blood, flesh, bones, sperm, and waste. In which dimension do these processes occur?

✍️ When we kill a mouse, an ant, or even a buffalo, do we boast? No. Do we feel sadness or guilt? If it were a human, we would feel that we had done something wrong. The law may punish our actions and ease our guilt, but we cannot escape the Universe’s punishment. This adds to our karmic account.

“The moment we realize the Universe punishes us equally whether we take the life of a human or another being, we avoid all kinds of violence (himsa).”
We face punishment when we kill a human because we are aware that it is wrong.
